The Board of Adjustment was established for the purposes of hearing and deciding appeals regarding decisions or determinations made by the Building and Zoning Administrator in the enforcement of the Zoning Code. Subsequently, if the Administrator's literal translation of the Code is determined to have resulted in an unnecessary or undue hardship, the Board of Adjustment has the authority to grant certain variances within specific guidelines. The board consists of 5 members who possess the technical, professional, financial, business or administrative skills necessary to accomplish the work of the board. Meetings are generally held on the last Wednesday of each month, at 1:30 p.m., in the City Commission Chambers. The board is supported by the Building Department, with Ms. Kim DeNais assigned as Contact Person, she can be reached at 941-954-4147.

The Historic Preservation Board was established for the purposes of recommending the designation of historically significant structures and archaeologically significant sites to the City Commission. The board also can recommend the designation of historically significant districts, approve applications for moving permits, and review recommendations for local properties being referred to the National Register of Historic Places. The board consists of 7 members who have demonstrated an interest in historic preservation and shall possess the skills necessary to make recommendations relating to historical properties. Meetings are generally held on the second Tuesday of each month at 3:00 p.m.in the City Commission Chambers. The board is assisted and supported by the Neighborhoods and Development Services.
